IFTA nominated film director Frank Berry gave a talk to film and media production students in Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education (CDCFE)
Berry’s “social realism” genre of works include the critically acclaimed Ballymun Lullaby, I Used to Live Here, Michael Inside, and more recently, Sky Cinema Original Aisha – which addresses the issue of direct provision in Ireland.
Frank, who was a tutor on CDCFE’s Film Production HND and BA Degree course now makes films that highlight issues such as addiction, poverty and suicide. He gave advice to students in a Q&A session, which was hosted by fellow director and film course tutor Leticia Agudo.
“Students who aspire to be directors should practice a lot – whatever the genre, you’ll learn from the experience of the audience watching the film, that way your voice will start to come through in your work. Students starting out in the industry should work hard to make connections and be positive, reliable and driven.”
The event was run as part of a work experience initiative by the college’s media department which featured Riverside Television’s Outside Broadcast truck. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a real-industry TV production training day.
Media tutor and organizer Melissa Brophy said “This is an excellent opportunity for our students to work and learn from professional camera operators, editors, vision & sound engineers who have all worked extensively in broadcast television, from news, current affairs & documentary, to sport, light entertainment & drama”.
Coláiste Dhúlaigh CFE’s Open Day will take place on Thursday March 2nd from 12 to 7pm. All are welcome to attend and speak to staff and students from the variety of courses on offer. There will be interactive workshops and demonstrations on the day, as well as information on learning and disability supports and educational grants and funding. For more information and to apply for a course visit www.cdcfe.ie
The SCC student bursary award scheme has been in operation since 1992. Renamed the Niall Smyth Memorial Bursary in 2003 to honour the memory of Niall Smyth, a teacher in Plunket College, who died suddenly in September 2002. Niall was actively involved in many SCC activities.
The scheme is there to assist CDETB students to achieve their potential in their particular Sporting or Cultural endeavours. Approximately 20 students benefit from the Bursary each year, including:
Sport – All sports considered, including: Gaelic Games, Soccer, Athletics, Basketball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Canoeing, Hockey, Kick Boxing, Cycling, Karate and Judo.
Cultural – All cultural activities including: Creative Writing, Music, Drama, Dance, Art and Photography.
We are hoping that all CDETB Colleges will nominate at least one student for the award.
To be eligible to apply for a bursary, applicants are required to meet the following criteria:
Be a full-time student in a CDETB College / Centre.
Specify one activity/event for which they are seeking assistance.
In the application, outline their sporting / cultural achievements to date. Indicate what they might use a bursary for in the future, and the cost involved.
A teacher may apply for a bursary on behalf of a student who may find difficulty in applying. We would ask teachers in general to oversee their student’s application, in order to make the strongest possible case for them.
All applications must be supported by two referees, one of whom is a teacher/Principal/etc in the student’s college/centre.
Please note that normal day-to-day club expenses such as travel and equipment expenses are not covered under the terms of this grant-aid scheme. It is not a hardship fund or designed to support students’ college fees. The bursary is awarded only where a student can show that the award will assist them to achieve greater success in their chosen activity.
Bursary applicants and recipients are expected to participate in SCC events, if the opportunity arises.
Applicants can apply either on-line or by post. Applications are accepted between September and March each academic year.
The annual Niall Smyth Memorial Bursary Award ceremony is usually held in May each year. The closing date for applications this year is: 16th March 2023.
Our photography and graphic design students are honoured to welcome you to our virtual exhibition.

Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education are delighted to congratulate their Film & TV Production BA Degree tutor, Leticia Agudo, who has been awarded a prize for Outstanding Achievement in Writing by International Screenwriting Competition (ISC) for her script Casa de Sullivan.
The screenplay documents the retirement of two women from different backgrounds, Irish and Spanish, and is set in Agudo’s home territory of Andalucia. “The premise is a battle of wills and cultures, I took inspiration from women I have known throughout the years”. Leticia, who is particularly interested in writing roles for women, is a member of Women in Film & Television Ireland since its beginnings. She feels it’s important to represent older women in particular for whom traditionally there has been a lack of opportunity.
Leticia, who has written, produced and directed across a variety of projects in theatre, television, film and animation – has been teaching on CDCFE’s Film Production Higher National Diploma and BA Honours Degree, which is awarded by University of Wolverhampton, for many years. She is also co-owner of production company Whackala which she founded with her husband Paul McGrath. Currently they are working on “The Grumpy Onion” an animation for RTE Junior.
“I have to be strict with myself when balancing the demands of both teaching and my work in the industry, I divide myself in half. The best advice I can give to my students is not to rush into things. Work with experienced people and try to make good connections. There are so many interesting creative jobs in the industry, from camera and sound to development etc.”
Leticia has recently worked on projects like “Remote” which was an anthology of covid stories that was released during the pandemic. She also wrote and directed “#NanaRocks” a short film that is currently playing in international film festivals. The director has great plans for the Casa de Sullivan script and says she would love to work with Antonio Banderas’ production company on it. “Its really competitive to get funding in Ireland, so it has been great to have my work noticed with the ISC award. It can be hard to get rejections for my script work but you learn to have a thick skin. I am a director first at heart and I love being on set – I can just see how everything should look”
The Film and Television Production HND course in Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education are now accepting online applications. This academic year, the third “Top-Up” degree year was Springboard+ funded, meaning students had a significant reduction in course fees. The Springboard+ initiative is funded by the government of Ireland in order to address skills shortages in areas such as the creative industries. Leaving Certificate graduates and mature students can apply for the HND course, while those with a HND or equivalent experience can go directly into the degree year which is accredited by University of Wolverhampton. Online applications are now open for courses starting in September. For more details on Film Production and the other courses offered at Coláiste Dhúlaigh CFE see www.cdcfe.ie.
Diarmuid Goggins, director of RTE’s hit show Kin, gave a guest lecture to our Film Production, Media Production and Creative Writing students this week.
The director gave an account of his career to date and gave valuable insights to our media department students on how to get a break in the industry.
Goggins, who originally studied a Post Leaving Cerificate diploma in Film in DFEI, has previously worked on BBC shows like Casualty and Silent Witness.
The director spoke passionately about the importance of being a “people person” in the media industry and about how he wrote the pitch for Kin outside Holles Street while waiting for his baby to be born during the pandemic.
Our students were given the opportunity to ask Questions and gain information on career paths into film and television production.
RTE’s Claire Byrne show correspondent Evelyn O’Rourke visited Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education (CDCFE) to feature their National Hairdressing Apprenticeship…
RTE’s Claire Byrne show correspondent Evelyn O’Rourke visited Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education (CDCFE) to feature their National Hairdressing Apprenticeship (NHA) course.
Evelyn went to the recently opened salon Cabello, located in CDCFE’s Kilbarrack campus on Greendale Road, where she met with hairdressing apprentices and NHA tutor and course coordinator Kevin Cahill.
Cahill, a former president of the hairdressing federation, spoke passionately about the QQI level 6 course that allows its apprentices to “earn while they learn”. He commented “The apprenticeship is a balance between the practical skills of the hairdressing industry and education. It’s based on an 80/20 roll out – the salons still train their apprentices to their own standards as they are their employees – then they spend the other 20% with us learning the theory that the salons rarely have time to teach”.
Philip McDonagh, a hairdressing apprentice at Coláiste Dhúlaigh CFE, spoke on the radio show about deciding to become a hairdresser after studying business for four years. “It makes me feel more confident in the salon to know I have the qualification”.
During the feature, Evelyn O’Rourke referred to Cabello as a “posh trendy salon” and remarked on the passion that the tutors have for the job. Hairdressing tutor Kevin Cahill, who has worked in the industry for almost 50 years spoke emotionally about how proud he was to be leaving something worthwhile behind him – “I know there is a future for these apprentices in the industry and the QQI Level 6 is also a bridge into higher education courses like business management if they choose to go that route”.
There are over 10,000 hairdressing salons nationally and the aim of the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship is to address the current skills shortage in the industry by training its participants to a QQI level 6 qualification that is the only nationally recognised qualification for hairdressers as well as being internationally recognised – meaning graduate apprentices can travel the world with their trade.
CDCFE’s NHA programme manager Aine Daly, said “we were delighted to welcome Evelyn O’Rourke to our Kilbarrack salon and showcase our state-of-the-art facilities. Coláiste Dhúlaigh were the first college in the City of Dublin ETB to run this programme and it is great to see our first intake of apprentices now moving into the third and final stage.”
The NHA is coordinated by The Limerick & Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) who worked with a consortium steering group when developing the programme. For more information about the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship at Coláiste Dhúlaigh CFE visit National Hairdressing Apprenticeship at Coláiste Dhúlaigh CFE (cdcfe.ie)

TV Architect Dermot Bannon visited students from Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education (CDCFE) this week. The Room to Improve presenter participated in a Q&A discussion with students from the Architectural Technology, Interior Design and Media courses.
Bannon was interviewed by CDCFE tutor Laura Roche, who also featured in season 13 of the show earlier in the year. He gave advice to students on how to make it in the industry and revealed that he was not academic in his school going days.
The event was part of a series of talks for students ahead of College Awareness Week, Mon 21st – Fri 25th November. There were also presentations on the day by RTEJr’s award-winning producer, Nicky Coghlan, who recently won the Prix Ex Aequo for his radio play The Emperor’s New Duds. Coghlan is a former radio tutor of CDCFE and has gone on to win IMRO and Radio Podcast Awards.
Also in attendance was Grainne O’Carroll, Senior Producer with Coco Content, who has produced shows like Blind Date, Who Do You Think You Are and the most recent series of Room to Improve.
Media Department Tutor, Laura Roche, said “it was an honour to have such prestigious guests visiting Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education. It is a great motivation for our students to see industry professionals who did not take the traditional routes through university and have nonetheless achieved great success in their careers”

I am interested in becoming an engineer. Does Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education offer a PLC course that might help me on my journey? We offer two one-year courses that may be of interest to you; Preliminary Engineering and Engineering Technology.
I would like to progress to a university course after studying at Coláiste Dhúlaigh. Which of the two courses will help me to do this? Both Preliminary Engineering and Engineering Technology give students opportunities to progress to university. Your choice of PLC course will depend on the specific university and course you’d like to progress into.
Are there any specific academic criteria for entry into either Preliminary Engineering or Engineering Technology?
Preliminary Engineering has a minimum entry requirement of an O3 or H6 in Leaving Certificate Maths, or similar. Mature students will be assessed on an individual basis, depending on circumstances. Applicants with Leaving Cert Applied will not be considered.
Engineering Technology will accept applicants with Leaving Certificate, Leaving Cert Applied, or equivalent.
I’m not interested in progressing into a university course and would instead like to get an apprenticeship. Will either of your courses help me to do this? Engineering Technology has been designed not only to help students progress to university courses but also those wishing to enter apprenticeship programmes.
If I complete the Engineering Technology course, will I be guaranteed an apprenticeship? Not necessarily. Good attendance, punctuality, and demonstrating a willingness to consistently engage with course material are just some of the things that will be considered when issuing letters of recommendation for apprenticeship programmes.
What university courses will be accessible to me after a year studying Preliminary Engineering? As the only PLC course in the country currently delivering the ‘Maths for STEM’ module, Preliminary Engineering is uniquely placed to offer students the opportunity to progress to Level 8 courses in the following universities:
Trinity College Dublin (TCD):
TR032, Engineering (Common Entry)
TU Dublin (City Centre Campus):
TU805, Engineering (General Entry)
Dublin City University (DCU):
DC200, Common Entry into Engineering (Undenominated Entry)
DC190, Electronic and Computer Engineering
DC193, Mechatronic Engineering
DC194, Mechanical and Sustainability Engineering
DC195, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
DC197, Biomedical Engineering
DC189, Global Challenges
DC123, Data Science
DC127, Common Entry into Actuarial and Financial Mathematics
I am interested in going to university and becoming an engineer, but my preference is for a different university course than the ones mentioned above. Should I apply for Preliminary Engineering? As things stand, the above courses are the only ones that require completion of the ‘Maths for STEM’ module for access. Other courses can also be accessed via Preliminary Engineering (the full list of university courses can be found on Careers Portal here), but each of these courses can also be accessed via Engineering Technology.
I have achieved the minimum entry requirement in Maths for Preliminary Engineering. Does that guarantee that I will be of the required standard to complete the Preliminary Engineering PLC course? Not necessarily. After four weeks of preparatory classes, our students sit an online exam in early October to determine their ability in the key areas of Number and Algebra:
Those who are successful in this exam will continue in Preliminary Engineering with the aim of progressing into the specific Level 8 courses listed above.
Those who are not successful will be redirected to Engineering Technology. From here, students can access a variety of other Engineering courses at Higher Education level, listed on Careers Portal here.
The course I want to progress onto can be accessed through both Preliminary Engineering and Engineering Technology. How do I decide which one to apply for? Engineering Technology is a less theoretical course, with more hands-on modules, project work, and a Mathematics module that is less challenging both in terms of course content and class time. It has traditionally been easier for students to achieve better results profiles on Engineering Technology than Preliminary Engineering, where students are required to commit to six hours of Maths per week and three hours each of Applied Maths, Chemistry, and Physics. If two applicants are competing for one university place, the one with the better results profile (i.e. six distinctions versus three distinctions) will be offered the place.
Do I just need to achieve my full QQI Level 5 award (i.e. pass all modules) in Preliminary Engineering to gain access to the Level 8 courses mentioned above? These courses also have additional entry criteria based on your results, as follows:
TR032 (TCD) – A merit or better in ‘Maths for STEM’, and distinctions in four modules (excluding ‘Work Experience’) which must include a distinction in ‘Physics’ or ‘Chemistry’.
TU805 (TU Dublin) – A merit or better in ‘Maths for STEM’ and five distinctions elsewhere.
DCU courses – A distinction in ‘Maths for STEM’ and four further distinctions.
If I meet these entry criteria, am I guaranteed a place on these courses?
Not necessarily. These courses have a quota of students they will accept via the QQI route in any given year. In 2022, these quotas were:
If more students than the quota achieve the entry criteria, the places on each course will be awarded to those with the best results profile.
I’m interested in Preliminary Engineering and would like to progress onto one of the Level 8 courses mentioned, but the entry criteria and university place quotas worry me. How likely is it that I will get my place in the course I want? Although the total number being accepted onto these courses may sound small, it is important to remember that only one other PLC course in the country (Pre-University Engineering in Pearse College) is currently delivering the ‘Maths for STEM’ module, and only ‘Maths for STEM’ students can meet the criteria outlined above. Preliminary Engineering enrols 24 students every year.
If I complete the Preliminary Engineering course and fail to achieve my place in one of the university courses outlined (because of the entry criteria or place quotas), will I be left with nothing? As long as you achieve your QQI award (i.e. pass all modules), you will still be entitled to apply for any one of the other courses at third level listed on Careers Portal here.
I’m a little unsure of my own ability to complete the Preliminary Engineering course. If I decide soon after starting that I am better suited to Engineering Technology, will I be able to switch? For the first month of the first semester, both courses run in parallel. Students will be able to switch from Preliminary Engineering to Engineering Technology.
We are holding Information Sessions for all who have applied for one of our courses already. You will have received an invite by text by now. You can also attend if you have not already applied. Please feel free to turn up to the event that interests you on the day. Please take note of which campus you should attend.
