Colaiste Dhulaigh College of Further Education has developed a bespoke programme to meet the growing demands of the medical healthcare and homecare sectors. The course is aimed at healthcare professionals looking to upskill to further enhance their career prospects. The course delivers a solid practical and theoretical understanding to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work effectively and offer support to a Physiotherapist in a clinical environment.

*Applicants must be employed either full-time or part- time.

Course Structure

This part time course will combine practical and theoretical learning in person with a qualified Physiotherapist.

Weekly – Thursday Mornings 9am – 11am

Course Content

Learners will be able to:

  • Summarise the roles and responsibilities of a physiotherapy assistant and of a chartered physiotherapist.
  • Explain the role of important anatomical systems.
  • Apply knowledge gained to recognise a range of common medical conditions.
  • Practice the skills required to support the client in all aspects of the physiotherapy intervention.
  • Identify the skills required to support therapeutic handling in a range of physiotherapy interventions.
  • Practice therapeutic handling in a range of physiotherapy interventions.
  • Reflect on relationships with client relatives and multidisciplinary team members and interpersonal issues that arise in physiotherapy interventions.
  • Reflect on personal effectiveness as a physiotherapy assistant to include own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and provide enhanced quality care and support.

Fees/Allowance

As part of the Skills to Advance initiative the cost of the training is covered by the National Training Fund so there is no direct cost to the applicant. To access this, the learner must be employed and provide their PPS number.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a previous QQI L5 Healthcare certification.
Applicants whose first language is not English may be asked to complete an English proficiency test prior to acceptance.
Please note that applicants outside of the EU must hold a Stamp 4 letter to be eligible to apply for the programme.
The course is subject to the minimum number of participants required.
